Made to measure.
Melbourne's RMIT has just announced details of a new $2 million Advanced Textile Materials Laboratory featuring the latest testing and development equipment for evaluating the performance of new Australian textiles.
The laboratory is able to measure the moisture and air permeability of different textiles using techniques such as gas analysis and spectrophotometery.
Students and researchers also have access to a 'Weather-Ometer' for simulating the impact of the natural environment on textiles, and a thermal mannequin to simulate the skin response of human bodies to different textiles.
The laboratory will allow RMIT to develop research, testing and education capabilities focused on sustainability and green-certified textiles, which are increasingly seen as the future.
The new equipment will help students learn about textile impurities, the durability and performance of products using alternative resources, and how to apply this knowledge in designing 'green' textile products.
Testing facilities will also be made available to industry wishing to analyse carbon emissions, water quality, contamination and energy management in textile and garment designs.
